Trifle is a layered dessert, usually made in a deep bowl or a trifle dessert dish so that the layers can be seen. A trifle dessert dish looks kind of like an upside down top to a round glass/crystal covered cake plate. Hope that made sense!
Trifle consists of layers of sponge cake, custard, whipped cream (or ice cream), fruits, and either jellies/jams/preserves or jello. It is chilled before serving.
When Acal said jelly, I was confused...but it's the language game again. What is called jelly in Australia and the UK, is called jello in the USA and Canada...either way, it is gelatin. However, you can use a matching jelly (what we know as jelly or may be known as jam in Australia & the UK) or preserves to mix with the fruit layers.
This is the basic trifle. There are now many variations that you can do, such as yogurt or a sour cream mixture in place of the cream layer, puddings...the kind we think of as "Jello puddings,"
and often Ladyfingers are used in place of the cubes of sponge cake. The fruit layers can be made of fresh, canned, or dried fruit, and you can use more than one. Also, Acal hasn't mentioned the cake/cookie layer, so maybe others leave it out.
There is a chocolate trifle recipe made with brownies and chocolate pudding, strawberries and the matching preserves or jello, and whipped cream.
There are loads of trifle recipes on the web, and they are fairly easy to make and are really good desserts for the warm months.
I've only had it with the whipped cream. A lady at church made trifle several times for one of the classes we were in...and it was delicious. Now I'm going to try making it with the ice cream.
I know everyone likes the bathroom scene in Vampire, Interrupted and it is very sensual but I wouldn't have liked being there personally... lol they were in a public train RESTROOM! YEEK!!! That's as bad as an airplane restroom! lol Sorry.
