What a haul!

Just wanted to share my success with people who will appreciate it. I went to my library's semi-annual book sale yesterday. This was the first year I had shelled out the $15 for the membership fee to join the Friends of the Library which gains you entrance to the preview sale which is held the day before the regular sale begins. I always wondered if I would find more stuff by doing this and now I know that you do!

At just .50 cents a paperback, I bought....ready?....80 books!! I know, I went crazy! But that's only $40 when to buy that many books new would be over $400. I found Candace Camp, Lisa Kleypas, Stephanie Laurens, Nora Roberts, Julia Quinn, Julia London, Laura Lee Gurke, Victoria Alexander, Sabrina Jeffries and many more. My husband looked a little askance at me when I shoved over a full box toward him with my foot (he was in the history section with the kids) and then said I was going back for more. But to his credit, he didn't say anything, just shook his head in bafflement.

There was one woman there with this little hand-held device (Blackberry or something) where she was checking titles to see if she had them in her inventory. I'm guessing she was shopping to resell online or she worked for a bookstore. She could have just been very organized about her personal library and didn't want to get doubles but I doubt it. I'm just glad that I managed to notice the back room was also open to people before she did.

I still might go back to the public sale this afternoon because I completely forgot to check and see if they had any gardening books. I was just so excited about finding so many books by so many of my favorite authors! I even found Love is Blind and another copy of Bite Me If You Can to send to my sister.

Life is good.

Re: What a haul!

You go girl. Not fair. I am so jealous! I miss book fairs. In the town I used to live in they had that at the public library to raise funds. They don't do it here although who knows why because their public library needs funds desperately.

I volunteer occasionally and have repeated made the suggestion but no one listens.

Re: What a haul!

That is great Kim. You are so lucky. Have fun reading and shopping

Re: What a haul!

Ohhh!!! How wonderful, I am pea green with envy. I tell ya! I have been raiding BN.COM for the past couple of weeks and my dad rolls his eyes whenever the UPS man comes and laughs when I attack the box with glee!

Re: What a haul!

Kelli I am same way. I think UPS, Fed EX and Postman see my name and cringe

Re: What a haul!

That is fantastic KIM!!SmileyCentral.com(happy dance!)

I wish my library did that...they just keep a table out and all the times, its nice but its fist come first serve and unless you go there everyday....all the good ones are gone!!

Re: What a haul!

My library does have an ongoing sale where I usually find at least one good book or more a week. They put out new stock as room is made for it which is great if a lot is selling but sometimes the same books will be out there for quite some time. So it's nice when they have their semi-annual sale and put up a bunch of tables and everything they have is on display all at once.

I did goof up and buy some that I already had but *shrug*. I was just grabbing everything I saw by certain authors. I'm sure I missed out of some good stuff by authors I'm not familiar with but I was there with my husband and three kids (all under the age of 7) and I didn't want to take too long.

I took out a notebook and starting making a list of everything I had downstairs (just the main authors on my keeper shelf) and compared it to what's in my new acquisitions and I have around 15 duplicates. But I found out recently that my sister has started reading some of the same authors as me so I can send most to her. With my luck she will already have all of the ones I have doubles of but at least I will only be out less than $10 if that is the case.

The only problem I have with getting so many books at the same time is deciding what to read first!

Re: What a haul!

I have problem all he time....whenever my grandmother or mother finishwith their books..they give them to me to read or sell!!

Its a great deal for me, but Now I have a pile of "need to read" and the number keeps getting larger as the days go by!!

There are about 20 right now and i really do want to read them, but i get hooked on a author and just keep rereading their books! (THE ARGENAEUS'S ) or even if i knowa new book will out soon for a series i will go back and reread the series to remember where i am at..(Like now, I am waiting for the next JR WARD to come out in June, so I just finished rereading the books i have to refresh!... Oh well, i will get to them eventually!

Re: What a haul!

Jill, maybe you should organize your own book fair. You might have to hold it somewhere other than the library if they aren't cooperating but I'm sure they'd let you put up fliers for it if the proceeds went to the library.

The best part about it would be collecting the books because of course you would have first pick! Five for me, one for the book sale.....

Re: What a haul!

I had to do it. I tried to resist, really I did! But I returned to the scene of the crime. Today was the last day of the book sale and...they had a bag sale!!

I ended up paying $10 ($5 for each bag) for about 30 books. Not as good a haul as yesterday in terms of finding books by my favorite romance authors but I found about 5 books by Iris Johansen and 5 books from a series called Duets - Romantic Comedies that looked interesting. I also found a copy of T,D, and H if anyone needs one. *grin* It's not brand new but it's in pretty good shape.

The other books were just anything that caught my eye. They probably won't get read for ages but at least I can't complain about having nothing to read for a while! I'd tell Lynsay to relax and take her time now but do I sound insane!! The second her next book comes out, all the other books are getting tossed to the side until I'm done with hers!! (I typed "look insane" first but remembered you can't see me!)

Re: What a haul!

Kimberely I completely understand. It would be very hard to stay away.

You guys are too funnySmileyCentral.com

Re: What a haul!

I'll tell ya what's insane! I was looking for two books by Shana Abe and they are out of print and some people want almost or more than $100.00 for a friggin paperback! Same with the book Adora by Bertrice Small before Cerrwiden reissued or published or whatevered it!! IT was even hard to find the older Kathleen E. Woodiwiss books and then she passed so they are reissuing them ugh those publishers! And the authors aren't getting a penny! JEEZ. Thank Goodness I have almost all of Mrs. Spice's (just need a few more historicals).

<-- Kelli's form of "love"
towards out of print book sellers hehehe I'm feeling rather ladylike tonight.

Re: What a haul!

What books by her are you looking for? I can keep an eye out for you if you still need them.

Alibris is a website that has books by independent sellers where I found a new copy of SWV for a good price ($3.50 plus $3.99 shipping) through an independent seller. That was before they reprinted it and I had to search around. Also, don't forget half.com. All the prices there are also fixed so there are no bidding wars. First come, first serve.

Re: What a haul!

I will check out those sites, thank you. I m looking for her (I think) first two The Promise of Rain and A Rose in Winter

It's crazy how some authors have the same titles for books... and sometimes the same cover picture is reused. I noticed this... anyway lol thank you

Re: What a haul!

I will look the next time I head to the book store as well. We have a Budget Bookstore by the house that I use in which I sell books that are not in my keeper pile (so far only Lynsay has that honor). Anyway, you take in books they give you a credit and when you are ready to by new or used books you can use your previous credit against those purchases. Yesterday I turned in $61 worth of credit books and bought just as many. I usually get the books I sell from yard sales, but Lynsay's books were bought new through B&N.

I'll let you know what I find there, I can e-mail them the books you are looking for and they will have them ready for me (if available) by this afternoon.

Re: What a haul!

Kelli - e-mail me the list of books you are looking for and I'll call them today. If they have them I will go get them and ship them to you.

Re: What a haul!

OHH WHAT A HAPPY DAY!
