Historical or supernatural?

So which do you all prefer? Historical books or supernatural books?

For me at the minute I would have to say historical I know I’ve been reading plenty of them.

Re: Historical or supernatural?

I'm a Historical diehard...just ask Lynsay..LOL.....although I do like some contemporaries by my favorite Historical authors. I don't mind a witch or a seerer showing up in a Scottish Historical....but I'm not much into the paranormal:)

Re: Historical or supernatural?

Supernatural suits my fancy better. I love a mix between them but if i had to choose.. yea definately supernatural

Re: Historical or supernatural?

I love supernaturals well them and anything with a modern day cowboy. LOL I just could never really get into historicals I have tried reading some of my moms but they don't grab my interest.

Re: Historical or supernatural?

I like both historical and supernatural. I love a book with a great mixture of both.

Re: Historical or supernatural?

ignore that post I just made I hit the wrong button. I love supernaturals. As for the paperback book exchange sounds like a great idea but I can't give up my books. I keep them all and reread them all the time.

Re: Historical or supernatural?

YAY Cher on keeping those books!!!

Hayley, I'm afraid I erased your post. It did sound like an ad and the last thing I'm going to do is advertise trading.

And GIRL! Please don't go posting things like that on writer's sites. Sheesh. Writer's make between 4% and 8% on each book sold and as low as 2% on anthologies.

My first, THE DEED, originally sold for 4.99, they now cost 6.99. So that's a measly little 20 to 56 cents per book tops each time one sold. And contrary to popular belief, we aren't all selling millions of books like J.K. Rowling.

The average print run for a first book is between 5000 and 20000 books. Lead writers average out at about 100,000 to 150,000 books printed for the smaller publishers like Dorchester and higher for other publishers like Avon and -- of course -- up to millions published for writers like J.K. Rowling.

HOWEVER, in the publishing industry 50% sell-through (selling 50% of those books, while the other 50% are returned to the publisher) is considered good, 60 to 70% sell-through is pretty good and so on. Writers only get paid for those sold.

Most writers really don't make a lot of money, and most have full or part time jobs to subsidize the writing. And yes they do wince when they hear about things like book trading and so on. They know it happens, they even understand it, but they really would rather not have it in their faces.

To be more specific on income, here's a quote from a survey done on writers incomes.

>Novelists and Nonfiction Authors: Making Books for >$7,500 a Year

>Authors of novels and nonfiction books are slightly >older and more experienced than all other writers >except academics. Averaging 48 years of age and 34 >writing hours per week, authors have been writing >professionally for 17 years and earn a median >income of $7,500. Those committed to multiple >genres put in 26 hours a week on their primary >field and 13 more on magazine features, short >fiction, or other assignments.

>In addition, 75 percent earn nonwriting income, >working an average of 16 hours in a nonwriting >field for $17,500. An author's work week can top 55 >hours for a total income of $25,000.

>Although 67 percent work full time on books, only >18 percent earn $30,000 or more from freelancing; >38 percent do from staff jobs; and 22 percent, from >contracts

So you see, while we understand that people are going to do the trading thing, we really really don't want to hear about it.

Lynsay, telling you more than you ever wanted to know about writing.

Re: Historical or supernatural?

supernatural for sure. I like Historicals but I love Supernaturals more.

Re: Historical or supernatural?

*wince* Ouch Lynsay! That hurts! Writers need to make more...look at how much other entertainers make, and a writer is an entertainer of sorts. You guys deffently need more.

I like histericals. If it can't make me laugh at some point and time, I'm not reading it. I prefer supernaturals over historicals; quickest way to get me to read a historical is to stick something supernatural in it.

Re: Historical or supernatural?

Supernatural, hands down. I'm a vampire romance junkie -- the steamier the better.

Re: Historical or supernatural?

Wow did not know writers made so little. I love my books and reread them all. I buy probably 10-15 books or more a month. I love finding new authors and always look for new stuff by favorite authors. More than anything I love series. Be they historical or supernatural. Just bought all of the Malory books by Johanna Lindsey had read a couple of them in the past and it's been on my mind to get all of them. I have so many books on my wish list on amazon and many of them aren't out yet but when I find a new author and she or he is good then I look to see what else they have coming out. Right now am reading a book by Susan Krinard it's about werewolves and I am now going to get her other books. One thing I wish is that the bookstores would carry more books by new authors. Even established authors I have a hard time finding their older stuff. Lynsay's books I can find the new ones easily but am looking for a couple I don't have yet that are older and Barnes and Noble and Borders don't carry them. Which means I have to order them. I don't like that. I want to look on the shelf and find what I am looking for. I don't like waiting even a couple days.

Re: Historical or supernatural?

Cher,
I keep on telling the people at Borders that I need to buy stock in their store. Between them and Amazone I probably spend close to $100.00 a month. The problem is my favorite Authors don't write fast enough..LOL. I want a new book the minute I finish one. I have arthritic knees so can't do much but read and play on the computor. I just had cataract surgery on my left eye and can't drive for another three weeks. So have been doing my book shopping on line :)

Re: Historical or supernatural?

I ordered Lady Pirate by Lynsay Sands a couple weeks ago from the bookstore and I am still waiting for it to come in. Apparently they are having problems with their distibuter.

Re: Historical or supernatural?

I ordered it from amazon.com, they didn't have any problems.

Re: Historical or supernatural?

A few weeks ago it would have been supernatural all the way but recently I have been bitten hard by this Victorian Romance Bug. I do believe my local library would wish I would stop bugging them.

I also however need a dose of humor in my romances. A gaint spoonful!

Re: Historical or supernatural?

I must say im a supernatural fan, dont get me wrong i love historicals i have just as many of them, but i really love supernatural ones i love the idea of there being things out there that are more then human.

Re: Historical or supernatural?

I love both of them but I enjoy historical romance a bit more

Re: Historical or supernatural?

Supernatural, Paranormal, LOVE those kinds of books .

Spookie...

Re: Historical or supernatural?

I like supernatural the most. I like Historical if they have a bit for supernatural in them, I am a sucker for a highlander...I am now reading a series from Karen Marie Moning which is pretty good.

And as for trading...no can do. I love my books, I don't even bend them. They could be 5 or 6 years old and still took brand new. Guess I am alittle crazy when it comes to my books. I don't even loan them out.

Re: Historical or supernatural?

Want to know something funny? Since answering this question, I've started reading a lot more historicals. There was a time I wouldn't have been interested at all, but my reading tastes have changed.

Re: Historical or supernatural?

i totally dig supernatural stuff.
recently, itz the In thing to read now. walk into a bookstore and we'll see "paranormal" romances.
and lotsa new authors popping up.

i totally dig the vampire stories. hahaa. love the fangs and the overall "i am never gonna die and i am so hot" package.

Re: Historical or supernatural?

I'm more into supernatural than historical novels. I don't know why, but for some reason I can't get into historical novels.
