Christians and, hopefully, soon-to-be Christians.  Welcome to our Discussion Board.

I know that many of you were disappointed that we had to suspend our old board due to so much spam.  We were having so much fun presenting and defending the Gospel of Christ.  Hopefully, we have resolved that problem while maintaining ease of access for our visitors.

We encourage ALL posters to be respectful in your posts as we will have many visitors who may never post, but will read your posts in diligent search of... "For what saith the scripture?"... on any given topic.

Please be reminded that Dr. Jack Evans rarely, if ever, visits or posts comments on this board. The board is for the benefit of those who seek Bible Answers to Bible Questions. Various points of view will be given on this forum, so we encourage each of you to study and support your views

struggles with sin

Why is sin so desirable some times even as a christian? Lusting is so strong and irresistable. If I have the Holy Spirit in me, why doesn't the Holy Spirit take it away?

Short of plucking out my eyes, how can I stop lusting?

Re: struggles with sin

Romans 7:18 – 25
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. 22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 I thank God -- through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.

As you can see, even Paul, who was an Apostle, struggled with sin. We will all always struggle with sin; this is the battle that wages constantly in the lives of men and women. We can overcome it by the blood of Jesus Christ (Revelations 12:10, 11). However, it takes a enormous amount of discipline and struggle to deal with sexual temptations in today’s world especially with the way our society views fidelity, abstinence, and such like things. Perhaps the first place to start is to consider what we feed into our psyche and mindset.

Romans 12:1-2
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Unless we first conquer and renew our minds, the first theater of battle, we are no match for Satan’s manipulation of us through the lust of the eye, the lust of the flesh, and our human pride. The best way to thwart these demonic influences is to study diligently (with much given effort and frequency) the Word of God and living to put it into our constant daily practice. David, who had his own battles with sexual temptations and sin, came to the conclusion that God’s word is the best defense against sin and considered the Lord as his shepherd. Psalms 119:11 (probably not written by David) explicitly implies that keeping God’s Word in your heart prevents one from sinning against Him.

Psalm 119:11
11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You!

Again, putting emphasis on diligence or concentrated, focused effort, Peter advises Christians how to make their calling and election sure by adding to one’s faith.

2 Peter 1:5-10
5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins. 10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble;

Keeping God’s Word in one’s heart (diligent study) and striving daily to walk and mature as a Christian (diligent effort) and a lot of prayer will keep one from having to pluck out his or her eyes. In essence, we must learn and mature in our spiritual development to the point that we actually hate sin (not the sinner) completely. Also, try not to look at women (or men if you are a Common Woman) as sex objects but learn to look at people as human beings with the same needs and frailties as everyone else. Also, we must be careful what you feed our minds, especially the TV (amen ) and radio too! Both bad company and bad communications corrupt good morals. This fact is powerfully true for all of us today and the various multi-media outlets at our disposal can have a very strong and negative effect on a disciple of Jesus Christ.

This is a very good question. In answering it, I came face to face with my own personal struggles with sin and how best to deal with them. Pray and study the Word diligently for strength and guidance and divine answers for dealing with sin; this is all that we have and it is more than enough!

2 Corinthians 10:3-6
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.
