Sometime after July of 1971, was standing outside my Albuquerque home and saw a pair of thin-waisted B-17-D's flying out of Kirtland AFB, headed south. They were fighting a fire, I believe in the Ruidoso or Capitan area. There is absolutely zero doubt of the ID of the craft. Not long after that, I heard that one of them had crashed and the other had been taken out of service. I think the crash was in NM, but wouldn't swear to that. But somewhere down here, is D-model crash site, and somewhere there is a D-model that is either flyable or perhaps nearly so. I'd sure like to hear from anyone who has any information on either of these B-17's. Thanks!
