Re: Favorite Immortal Names

It's okay. I have a nickname which I absolutely detest and I allow only one person in this world to use it and that is my mother. You can't really abbreviate my name any more than it is. Unless you want to call me Ji.

Okay everyone you can call me Ji

Re: Favorite Immortal Names

My daughters name is Kassandra but we call her Kassie or just Kass for short. I wanted a nice strong girls name for her. I always hated my name growing up because it can be used for a girl or a boy. One of my older brother's friends used to call me Odie all the time and it was really annoying! my son's name is Logan and there isn't really any nickname you can get out of that but I always call him buddy, don't really know why just always have.

Re: Favorite Immortal Names

I like the name Kassandra and Kassie...I like it spelled with the K, but I usually like very traditional spellings. I think Kassie's name is very pretty!

Our sons are named Duncan and Donovan. We actually gave them twin names without knowing it. Duncan is Scottish and Donovan is Irish, and they both mean "warrior, dark warrior, or brown chief." We didn't do that on purpose. We just liked the names. We had heard Duncan on the television show "The Highlander" and we had heard Donovan from the John Wayne movie "Donovan's Reef." (E.G.'s father was a big John Wayne fan!)We didn't name them for the characters...it's just where we heard the names. We have always called them by their given name. No one shortens them to Dunc or Dunky, or Don, Donny, or Van.(I would hate to have to stake, bake, and slice heads off over nicknames but I do feel strongly about it.)

Actually, at their ages, they will correct someone who calls them by a shortened nickname on their own now. Once in awhile, Donovan has to correct someone when he first meets them because they will think his name is Jonathan, which is fairly popular where we live.

Re: Favorite Immortal Names

Cindy,

You are one of the few people who recognized what my first name was immediately. I've only seen it in baby name books a couple of times.

My parents got Alesia out of a book that my mother was reading. I wish she remembered the name of the book, as I'm named after the heroine. We all get our love of reading from my mother! Anyway, they liked it so they looked it up in a baby name book then...but they didn't want to spell it like Alicia, which is how it is pronounced. Momma wanted it to be different!

I wouldn't change it because I think it is pretty. Besides, they always intended to call me Renee. My parents said Renee just doesn't "flow" as a first name. It sounds better in the middle. It's very common to be called by your middle name in the southern US anyway. I'll answer to either...and now to wren as well!

There is an author of contemporary and mystery books named Alesia Holliday...but Alesia is pronounced like Alesa...without the /sh/ sound and with a long /e/ sound...as in A-Lisa. She has had to correct people all of her life as well about spelling and pronunciation, so she explains it on her website! We emailed once about the difficulties of the name. She now writes paranormals/fantasy of some kind under the name of Alyssa Day. I haven't read any of her new work, though, but I'm sure it is good. I don't have time with all my Argeneau rereads!

Re: Favorite Immortal Names

I guess it is the mix that makes looking at most names and being able o pronounce them. And if you have a accent..Look out. I can pick it up in just a few seconds. It is not making fun it just comes natural. I worked with this girl from Australia. When the manager came by and we both said something he said "Oh great now I got two of you". We just laughed. One of my best friends in high school her mom was from England. Before you knew it I had the dialect down perfect.

The only language I took in school was ...English.
But I do have how to learn French. Am trying to learn it so when we go to Paris I can at least order something and not snails or frog legs!!!

I already know some basic words. A friend of mine is helping.

Re: Favorite Immortal Names

Good luck Cindy. I love learning languages. My accent though is atrocious. I learned Spanish and I loved it. But I sound horrible speaking it so I avoid it at all costs. My jersey accent still gets in the way.

Jodi and Wren, I love the names you picked for your children. I haven't seen Kassandra spelled with "k" too many times so that makes it unusual. Wren I have always liked the name Duncan. Reminds of a yummy Scottish warrior. Now I know why
