lynsay a movie reminded me of you...

I know this is way off subject but I watched this movie the other day, and it reminded me of Lynsay and a few of her conversations with us...

Has anyone watched..."STRANGER THAN FICTION"? its with Will Ferral (spelling?)

The whole movie is about a writter with writters block. She is down to the last book in her series and is supposed to kill of the charater, but she can't figure out how...in the mean time Will Ferralls charater is actually the main charater in her book, so he starts to hear her narrating everything as she is typing...eventually he figures ot he isn't loosing his mind and finds her and begs her not to kill him!

its quite clever and reminded me of when you (LYNSAY) talk about when the characters come to you to tell their story. Just thought i would ask if you had seen it...and if not i thought i would bring it to your attention, you might enjoy it!

I've seen this on Gena, it was definately not a story line I had seen before.

I loved that movie Gena. The ending was so good. I nearly held my breath to the point of passing out to see what happen to him.

Re: lynsay a movie reminded me of you...

I saw that film! From the second I saw the previews I wanted to see it. It wasn't spectacular but it was very entertaining.

When I was a kid I used to wonder if I was just someone in a book and what would happen when they got to the end or if I was just dreaming or a character in a dream. Is that something all kids go through because my daughter told me the other day (she's almost 8) that's she's wondered the exact same thing. Just out of the blue (where does that expression come from?) she told me that she wondered if we were someone's dream. If we are, what should we do? I told her that if we are, we'll never know for sure so we should just keep on living our lives the way we always have.

This reminds me of a short story I read once. I believe it was in a book called Immortals. Okay, just quickly checked Amazon, it is the right title with the editors Jack Dann and Gardner Dozois (what kind of first name is Gardner?!). It's the story called Learning to Be Me by Greg Egan. It's about an advanced society where a computer chip or something like that called a "jewel" is installed into everyone's brains and it learns to mimic the person exactly over time. After so many years, people make the "switch" where the brain is deactivated or shut down and the jewel takes over. This is to prevent the decaying that occurs with age. If I remember right, all other major organs can be replaced except the brain.

Well, some people get really nervous about the "switch". The main character is kind of freaked and chickens out of doing it at the same time as his girlfriend and then breaks up with her. But at the end there is some kind of ambiguity over whether he has already switched and didn't realize it because the jewel thinks of itself as him already.

I remember getting really creeped out by this story but it really makes you think too. I just saw now that this story is also included in an anthology called Axiomatic by Greg Egan. It sounds like the stories are kind of similar in that they are very thought provoking and I'll have to check my library to see if they have it.

I used to read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy and have veered away from it in recent years. After reading the reviews for Greg Egan I think I'm going to have to rethink that. It will keep me busy over the summer while waiting for Lynsay's next book.

Yes Gena, I did see it. It reminded me of a Twilight zone episode I saw years ago. I think it was the Twilight zone . . . hmmmm, anyway, I only have vague memories of it, but as I recall there were four or five people and they figured out that they were the characters from someone's story and that everything that was happening was taking place in the writer's mind and so on.

Kim -- I've never wondered that, but am guessing the writer of the Twilight Zone episode as well as the writer of the Ferrell movie sometimes wondered if he/she weren't just a dream or someone's story character as well. I think that denotes a certain feeling of helplessness or lack of control in your own life which is probably common to children. I mean they really don't have much control, do they? They are told when to get up and when to go to bed. They are told when to eat, what to eat, when and where they can play, etc.
