Ranting a bit

I get so aggravated when I hear people putting down romance books as trashy romance books. I can't tell you how much history I have learned by reading Historical Romances. Just because I don't read every thing Oprah recommends doesn't mean the books I read aren't as enjoyable. And Why doesn't she ever recommend Romances? After all most of her audience are women and you can't tell me none of them read romance books.
Thanks..I feel much better now

Re: Ranting a bit

Excellent, Jacquie!

I am so on your side...and by the way, I don't care much for what Oprah does recommend. Like you, I have learned so much history from reading romance.

Let's see...Oprah's big thing now is "being your best self" or something like that...I can't be objective, because I'm just not an Oprah fan. I think she lost something along the way to her fame and fortune.

A lot of women and men hide the fact that they read romance. Who knows why? It's too bad, because there are so many different types of romance books today...there is a romance book to fit anyone's taste in reading.

Re: Ranting a bit

Hehe I just picked up a book today that would be sterotyped as a 'trashy' romance novel its looking pretty good so far Its already hot and its only Chapter 3! (25 pages in )

Re: Ranting a bit

What book Acal?

I myself don't like Oprah's picks and don't watch her anymore.

my hubby once said that romance books were just like porn I tried to explain some of the books I've read to him and I don't know if it has changed his mind or not but I have found that like you Wren and Jacquie I have learned a lot about history from the books I have read and it doesn't matter what anyone says as long as I enjoy reading them I will.

Re: Ranting a bit

Aw Yes! I hate this, remember the old "don't just a book by its cover"? Well that's what they do! Every time I read a book my dad teases me about "Kelli reading another dirty book" and those "Porn magazines" (haha Cosmo, Glamour) I do read less romantic reads like things by Khaled Hussein (spelling?) and Dan Brown but jeez nothing wrong with some romance!!!!!! But Oprah can still purchase a car for me if that would make her (oh and me) happy... Bring on the trashy romance!

Re: Ranting a bit

Jodi, its The Dark One by Ronda Thompson, I almost didn't buy it but the title caught my eye before I left the store

Re: Ranting a bit

I don't care if they judge my books as trashy. What I don't appreciate is the fact the judge me as unintelligent because I read them. Like you Jacquie I have learned incredible amounts of facts from them.

I have read books described as the worlds finest literature and have found them be pretensious and boring. On the other hand I have picked up a "trashy" romance book and laughed all the way through and continue to read it again and again.

I had decided a long time ago to never allow someone tell me whether a book is good or not. I will read it myself and then decide. And that is my speech for today

Re: Ranting a bit

All the people that say they are "trashy" are stuffy old prudes and wouldn't know what a good novel unless it grew a jaw and teeth and bit them on the ass!

Re: Ranting a bit

I think I've read that book, Acal. Don't the heroes in that series have some kind of curse on them?

wren

Yes, I have. The Dark One is the first book in the Wild Wulfs of London series by Ronda Thompson. I have book three: The Cursed One if you need it.

Re: Ranting a bit

Acal...Ronda Thompson was an excellent writer and I enjoyed the books that I have read. I found out recently that she died of ovarian/pancreatic cancer...a type of cancer that moves rapidly. Her books are still available at this time.

Re: Ranting a bit

wow, wren, i had no idea...

I was just given one of her books, but haven't read it yet! are they all hot and steamy..the ne i have is called "CALL of the MOON" anyone read it, i am cuious before i spend tie reading it!

Re: Ranting a bit

Wow I should track down all her books then they seem to be really great

Re: Ranting a bit

Acal, if you are looking for a good "trashy" romance with a bit of paranormal. I have become addicted to Lora Leigh. She has a series called the Breeds.

But I warn you these are not for faint of heart. When I say steamy I mean it.

Re: Ranting a bit

yea, i haven't read any yet, but my mother just had me spend almost $200 in one shot to get her all the books in the BREED series...she is obssesed with them! i can't wait until she is done with them, so i can read them...

ALSO...I am just finishing, "SECRETS vol. 6"...they are written by 4 different authors...for each book. They have 4 different stories, from historical, vampires, shapeshifters, werewolfs...each one is different...and i think there 22 of them total right now.....and let me tell you! I am looking into get the rest, but the one i have is H-O-T! HOT! SmileyCentral.com

Re: Ranting a bit

I've read Call of the Moon and all the Ronda Thomson "Wild Wulf's" series, even the two anthology stories. I've got all of them on my keeper shelf. Call of the Moon is the novel that involves one of two brothers who were bitten by a werewolf. The brother's story is in the After Dark anthology with Ashley and Feehan.

The first Wild Wulf's story is in the Midnight Pleasures anthology with Kenyon, Ashley and Shayne. Then comes The Wild One, The Untamed One, another short in Love At First Bite, and the final book is The Cursed One.

I rank all of them as good solid reads, maybe not the best books of the year, but well worth reading.

Re: Ranting a bit

Is the fourth book the way it was suppose to end?

Re: Ranting a bit

Rhonda Thomson sounds good. What is the first in her series?

Gena, I did the same thing your mom did with the Breeds series although maybe not that much. I had the hardest time getting the first in wolf breeds series and I just got it. So now my collection is complete and I am very happy camper.

What is the series you are reading now?

Re: Ranting a bit

i am rereading AQB to finish the questionsand submit,
but i just stumbled across, a book named
SECRETS (womens romance) vol,6... they are incredible...there are 22 so far, each one has at least 4 stories in them. maryjanice davidson, angela mcknight, the list goes one, each one has different autors as well. talk about reading in a cold shower...wow! its like nothing i have ever read....they move around in the time periods, and in the desires. vampires, lords ladies, werewolfs you name it....and they go down any way you can think of and then some! not for the faint of heart!

of course i am going to try to track more down!

Re: Ranting a bit

They sound interesting. I see what I can find on Amazon.

Re: Ranting a bit

Hmm... I don't remember The Cursed One having a weird ending. It's the 5th story in the Wild Wulf's (two anthology stories). But maybe you were referring to another book.

And Jill, I listed the Ronda Thompson series in order in my post above.

Re: Ranting a bit

Oh thanks Denise. I think I am gonna like them. I got to read an Excerpt from Amazon's online readers and from what I saw it will be a good book. I love starting a new series.

Re: Ranting a bit

Gena, I have a couple of the Secrets anthologies because I like the MaryJanice Davidson Wyndham Werewolves stories. These are MUCH warmer than the books I normally read.

Re: Ranting a bit

yea, they seem to have an anything goes policy!

Re: Ranting a bit

I have a rant, do you know the site "Likesbooks.com" ? well I think that's rather ironic because most of their darn reviews are horrible! They seem to hate everything written. Argh at them !

Re: Ranting a bit

Its probably a parody on the name, I know for a fact that the most popular reality shows forum is called Show Sucks (name of show before)

Re: Ranting a bit

nope it is "All About Romance" and they even have interviews with romance authors. eh, I guess I'll just have to resist e-mailing them telling them that they should re-read Lynsay's books or my other favorite authors and that they are retarded reviewers.

Putting my halo back on.

Re: Ranting a bit

And that's why I stay away from reviewers as much as possible unless I know the have similar tastes as my own. I find reviews for books that I loved and see who gave them good reviews, then look for other reviews by the same person. Much better results that way.
