Cakes

so totally of the topic of books, my brother is having his birthday on the 21st and I always make his birthday cakes, this year he asked for a strawberry cake with chocolate icing. Just wondering if anyone has a recipe for strawberry cake? I have never made one before.

Jodi

Re: Cakes

Some of these listed here sound yummy!

Re: Cakes

you can always, just smash up some fresh strawberries and add them to the batter, of any kind of cake, except I wouldn't try it with angel food, its too tempermental!

Re: Cakes

I love strawberries with angelfood cake. Every year my niece has Straberry iced angelfood cake.

If you give it a crumb coat and let it dry you can add a fat layer of strawberry frosting. Then cut strawberries in thin layers holding them together till you can fan them out. Do that all over the top of the cake and around the base! Its awesome...

Re: Cakes

Thanks guys!

Re: Cakes

Hmmm...Mr. Spice claims not to have had a birthday cake since he was 9yo...at least, according to his "getting to know you" quiz.

Wonder if he likes Chocolate cake...I have a recipe for a fantastic Chocolate Buttermilk Sheet Cake that I could send to Lynsay & Terri or anyone who wants a good chocolate cake recipe...Me & the ladies in my Bithday Beauties club almost always pick it(the birthday girl gets to choose the cake and the restaurant where we go out to eat for her birthday)...we all know the recipe by heart because we have made it so many times.(our little club has been together for years...there are eleven of us because one friend moved away.)

Sorry, Jodi, I don't have a Strawberry cake recipe...all the ones in my Bell's Best cookbook use a white cake mix as a base and add in strawberries the way Gena suggested!

wren...who is suddenly feeling like having cake

Re: Cakes

You guys are killing my diet talking about cake ~groan~. Now will have to tackle the vendor who brings in free cookies and cakes after lunch, and growl at those getting near them. Aughhhh

Jody I will look through my cookbooks tonight for a Strawberry Cake recipe.

Re: Cakes

I hope everyone is sitting down for this shocking revelation. I don't like chocolate cake. In fact I don't like any kind of chocolate dessert. chocolate ice cream or chocolate fudge. They all taste horrible to me.

Now mention the word cheesecake and it's a whole different story - provided it's not some weird kind of chocolate cheesecake.

Dave

Re: Cakes

Mr. Spice, WHAT!!!!!!! you don't like chocolate? impossible!

Jodi

Re: Cakes

Chocolate is Mana. You can not survive without chocolate. Cheesecake..naw..no way..

Re: Cakes

Sorry girls, i am sidng with MR. Spice on this one....

I grew up in belgium, (YES I WAS SPOILED!) and after growing up with freshly made Chocolate from the Godiva bakery....nothing tastes good to me! Haven't eaten choclate since i have been home!

NOW, give me a little creme pastry, and its all over!

G3 (whos been spoiled by her daddy growing up!)and still is!

Re: Cakes

I love cheesecake, and it is one of my dh's faves. but we both like it plain, preferably the New York style, without any toppings. I want to taste my cheesecake.

Dave, we will just put candles on your cheesecake. You only need 10, as there were only 9 on your last birthday cake. Or, you can just get one of those question mark candles, and use it every year! That way wax wouldn't drip on your cheesecake while you make your birthday wish...it's right there in the name...cheeseCAKE! My friend's dh always has a pie of some kind on his birthday...he doesn't like cake.

Btw, the only chocolate cake that I like is the one I mentioned earlier...which tastes kind of like brownies. It's a very light chocolate. I do not like chocolate ice cream either, and never have, even as a child. My dh sometimes calls me "plain Jane vanilla" when we order dessert. I will almost always choose vanilla, even if there are 31+ flavors of ice cream to choose from...I do not like cakes that have chocolate frosting, either. I do not like dark chocolate, but I like really good milk chocolate. I do like some chocolate candies, but I'm picky about them. I do not like chocolate chips in my cookies, so dh makes me a batch of "chocolate chipless" cookies from the same Tollhouse recipe on the back of the chocolate chip package. If you leave the chocolate chips out, you end up with a kind of buttery sugar cookie...or I guess they would be called "biscuits" in England. They would be perfect for tea. Are all cookies called biscuits in the UK?

My grandma used to make "tea-cakes" a kind of southern US cookie that was lightly sweet, but just right...and no chocolate in them. They were somewhat fluffy and very soft like a light sugar cookie with just a hint of the vanilla sweetness. They were good with anything. Unfortunately, as so often happens, we don't learn those old recipes...and both my grandmas and my adopted "granny" cooked the old-fashioned way...they just knew what to add without having to measure anything.

I used to love to get bread pudding at Applebees, but they took it off the menu because not enough people ordered it. It was so good and would just melt in your mouth. Instead, most everyone wants the super-dark fudge lava explosion cake, with fudge topping all over it and a scoop of vanilla ice cream...talk about death by chocolate. My dh and younger ds usually share one, because it is a huge dessert, and they both love it. Older ds and I wouldn't touch it...way too much chocolate. The only good thing about that dessert is the vanilla ice cream on top...if they don't ruin it by getting the hot fudge dribbled over it.

wren...who vaguely remembers a time when she cooked...everyday, and not just desserts...maybe if I don't think about it, the feeling will go away..

Re: Cakes

One of my vendors brought one but two Rum poundcakes his wife makes. Heavy on the rum too! I am in sheer heaven right now, and I'm sure if I ate the whole thing I would be a little tipsy. Now my favorite!

But agree with Mr. Spice - Love Cheesecake more than chocolate cake. I like Italian Cheesecake made with Ricotta though. It's smoother with a little bite and tastes wonderfully with a true cappacino. Acaraba bona!

Re: Cakes

I don't really like cheesecake, except the one my mom always made but it isn't the same as a normal cheesecake so I don't think that counts.
Wren-my mom used to make us bread pudding, I never liked it but my brother loves it. I have the reciepe but I haven't made it yet. I am the type who likes to bake but I like it even more if it is something I like if you catch my meaning
I made my husband's b-day cake like always, he likes angel food cake and I can't stand it.
for my birthday my husband always makes my favorite lemon cake with boiled icing with a little bit of chocolate icing in the center, I am not picky or anything eh?

Jodi (who is now very hungry!)

Re: Cakes

OMG Mr. Spice. You know I was okay with you eating weird foods like Branston Pickle and Marmite.

But to hate chocolate it is just not RIGHT. I love cheesecake too but it CAN NOT AND WILL NOT replace chocolate. NO SIREE.

Re: Cakes

ok I lied about my chocolate SmileyCentral.com aversion....I loveoreos and PB cups...other than that no chocolate! ok, maybe the babyruth every now and then!
oh forget i even said anything...give me a SmileyCentral.com
G3 (being the baby mens i can change my mind! )

Re: Cakes

G3,

I do like Oreos if I have milk with them, and I do like PB cups, and those little Hershey cherry-chocolate kisses...those are kind of addicting, though. Okay, I like Baby Ruths too, but I like Paydays better which is really the same thing without the chocolate.

But, chocolate ice cream...to me is ...just broke a major family rule. You don't have to eat anything you don't like, but you simply say, "I don't care for any, thank you." My momma will be on me about my manners! That is a huge no-no...we do not say something is yuck...we might hurt someone else's feelings.

W2

Re: Cakes

Thats okay W2. I was just teasing. Feel free to express your disgust over chocolate or any other food.

One of my best friends hates chocolate and she reminds me daily about her aversion. We agree to disagree.

I just try to convince as many people as I can to come over to the dark side with me.

Re: Cakes

WREN.....we are so much alike its scary! Can't beat the payday!! they are a weakness of mine!
Chocolate icecream or chocolate cake deffinately YUK!SmileyCentral.comdon't care about manners! thats how I feel!(yes, the bratty lilSmileyCentral.comis comming out again!)

Re: Cakes

Re: Cakes

Hmm....all this talk about chocolate makes me hungry for some ......macaroni and cheese.

In fact I have had a craving for mac n cheese (Kraft from the box only) for a while but now the craving is full fledge force of nature. I think I am gonna feed the beast tonight for dinner.

Re: Cakes

mmmmmmm.....velvita and shells!

Re: Cakes

You know, I've realized that I do like chocolate...the light, milk chocolate...and not on any other thing like vanilla ice cream or cheesecake.
Do not mess up perfectly wonderful ice cream or cheesecake!

Of course, it's the dark chocolate that is supposed to be good for you...too bad, because I just don't like it. That is why I don't like Chocolate Chip cookies...it's those semi-sweet chips that my dh likes in them.

But, I love hot cocoa, especially with mini-marshmallows on top!

wren...don't know what brought on this post but I'm going to see if we have any brownie mix

P.S. Also love Kraft Mac-n-Cheese...the boxed kind It's so processed and fast and easy to make!

Re: Cakes

W2 - Mac N Cheese with hotdogs (and no I don't want to know what they are made of ) is my favorite all time meal.

Do you like white chocolate at all?

J4-Humming tunes of Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory in her head.

Re: Cakes

Mac n' Cheese with hotdogs is one of my kids favorites, I like the Mac n' Cheese and I like hotdogs just not together I don't know why.

So my brother has settled on a birthday cake after me looking up recipes online. He wants chocolate cake with raspberry jam and boiled icing. sounds good to me and really easy to make and my daughter will be really happy, she voted for the chocolate.

Jodi

Re: Cakes

Well that's good, I was still looking through recipe books for Strawberry cake recipes.

Love me some Mac N Cheese with hotdogs. Now I'm craving that - and I'll have to use my imagination as we are having sushi tonight.

Re: Cakes

Stauri, well if you happen to come across one I would still like to try it.

Jodi

Re: Cakes

Stauri don't wait to long or the craving will get too strong. You will be all strung out for mac n cheese and then you will be breaking in grocery markets at night and meeting with shady characters in back alleys just to score.

Trust me you don't want to go down the road.

Re: Cakes

J4...when we are naughty, big sis catches up with us...after she calls us "instigator" then she gets naughty too. Lil sis orbs in and we get naughtier. My crystal ball makes me do it...yeah, that's it...uh-huh!

Then, we all go to the corner with our books
and be good until we can come out.

Stauri, you have been very good. You take care of helping bump "getting to know you" and other good stuff. Would you like to be trouble-prone with us ?heeheehee What about you, Jodi?
It's time to reread and find some yummy new discussions! Jodi, has your box arrived yet?
No...I haven't heard a squeal from the NT of Canada yet! Got our parcel today...will email more info later! LOVE THE MAPLE LEAF LOLLIPOPS! Your dd is a girl who knows my heart!

I like pink...but sometimes it's more fun to be green!
And, it's almost St. Patrick's Day...so let's be green through Monday. Bwahahahahaha.....We can be pink for Easter!

guess who?

Re: Cakes

J4

I like white chocolate only drizzled on cakes and stuff like that. Not as a candy bar or anything. Just a topping sort-of thingie...

W2

Re: Cakes

Wren, Yes, Yes Yes - love to instigate, the devil in disguise. Gloating cause she thinks she's cool now.

Jodi, I will continue my rampage through the numerous cookbooks I have.

Jill, I have no control, I stuffed myself silly at the sushi bar last night - major heartburn until 3am this morning. You were right still having a Mac n cheese lust, going to fix for lunch and eat the whole stinking box.

You know you guys are great, my mood is lifted when I get on here. Thanks everyone!

Re: Cakes

Wren, no the box hasn't arrived yet your right though, you would definately know when it does

Jodi

Re: Cakes

Wren, do let me know what you thought of everything we sent, also let me know if there is something we missed or that you might like and we can send it off next.

and I agree with Stauri you guys are great I usually end up laughing while reading the posts.

Re: Cakes

...I stayed on the computer all night, and I'm in big trouble on the homefront. My Frog Prince says I am banned from my computer until I get my work finished. Well, I did stay up late to take care of paperwork and the bills...plus I had sweet tea with dinner and caffeine makes me bounce off the walls ...but it was more fun to play on the , and I don't want to do the work...Is there a whiny, pouty face somewhere in the smilie choices? we will try this one!

He was very nice and let me a long time...he is playing playstation and I am being sneaky.

Ooooh...but he will catch me...I think he knows... ...will be back later!

G3, be prepared to orb me to Florida, okay?

W2...over & out but I'LL BE BACK!

Re: Cakes

Be very very careful Wren. Use all your powers to distract him. Can not afford to lose you from the Argeneaut cause. Who will keep me and other sisters on the straight and narrow when we began to stray off topic

Stauri I could tell from your earlier post that you were a kindred spirit.

J4- Who continues to blow off housework, balancing her checkbooks, and paying her bills to talk to everyone on the forum

Re: Cakes

Oh, don't worry, J4...he has caught me already and I'm still here! I'm only "banned" until I finish the bills, because I did say that I would do it. Marguerite would probably make me be "a woman of my word." But...I am going to make My Frog Prince help me...yes, that's it. Catch up the checkbook, then get fussed at for spending too much money mostly at the bookstore, then pay bills together! It'll work...Can you tell we have had this scene played out before?

Sometimes I amaze myself!

The amazing wren...SmileyCentral.com

Re: Cakes

Good idea Wren. In fact make it seem like it was his idea to help you.

Re: Cakes

J4,

Your powers are obviously growing!

Brilliant idea!

W2..."Oh, My Dear Frog Prince, will you make some mac-n-cheese while I update the checkbook and then help me organize all this mail?"

Re: Cakes

I bet by the time you are done W2 you will have your hubby completely wrapped around your finger. Or is he already?

J4,

It's actually more of a "We are in this together, forever!" thing! That's all I know...I lead a blessed life.

Re: Cakes

Wren, I am very very jealous. But someday my prince will come. Or not whatever fate decides

Re: Cakes

Sending dwarfs, birds, mice, squirrels, and other forest animals to help Jill prepare her cottage for her Prince. Casting protective charms around your domain to keep out the evil . Now singing in my mind "someday Jill's prince will come" , and remember to throw the brother my way.

Happy now, got my mac n cheese fix, now have a Queso craving today. Augghh, it never ends. Going to prepare the grill for fajitas and veggies tonight.

Wren, sending my 15min. powers for you to be able to complete your task. I had to use mine recently to finish a Diaper cake for a baby shower. Had to work on sewing tulle, and other things.

Re: Cakes

And you said you couldn't sing. We all have a little musical junkie inside.

As far as my Prince, if he has a brother you will get first crack.

I had my mexican last night. Mom's from New Mexico and can make the best flour tortillas in the world. Just my humble opinion though
