I have a 10year old daughter myself. I got her reading the twilight series, I also picked up the book called Marked by PC Cast and also Maryjanice davidson writes some young adult books about a weredragon. My daughter will have lots to read now over the summer.
I understand your frustration when trying something good to read and not being too adult. I too was also like that as a kid. I read VC Andrews,Dean Koontz, and others. I am glad there are more choices out there for kids who need to be more challenged at reading so they don't loose interest. I am proud to be considered a book worm and I alway said when I retire, I will work in a bookstore as a dream job
