Banners and Such?

Lynsay, David,

Are there banners available that we can add to our myspace profiles?

I have Katie MacAlister and Sherrilyn Kenyon banners and would like to add one for your Vampire series too.

I could make my own but I'm not terribly artistic.

I went to HarperCollins/Avon to read about Lynsay. On that it has book titles. Once you click on it, it takes you to a page that says "Get this Widget". G3 It has several codes including MySpace. I put one on my Frapper site.

Hope this helps.

Re: Banners and Such?

I saw that widget, it's very cool! But I wanted something a little more general.

Right now I'm having trouble adding any more code to myspace so I'll have to have another go with the widget later.

Re: Banners and Such?

Wow - You're such a fantastic and creative bunch. I'd take my hat off to you - if I was wearing a hat.

This is from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The web widget is a portable chunk of code that can be installed and executed within any separate HTML-based web page by an end user without requiring additional compilation. They are derived from the idea of code reuse. Other terms used to describe web widgets including: gadget, badge, module, capsule, snippet, mini and flake. Web widgets often but not always use DHTML, JavaScript, or Adobe Flash.

Widgets

Embeddable chunks of code have existed since the start of the World Wide Web. Web developers have long sought and used third party code chunks in their pages. It could be said that the original web widgets were the link counters and advertising banners that grew up alongside the early web. Later, ad and affiliate networks used code widgets for distribution purposes.

A widget is anything that can be embedded within a page of HTML, i.e. a web page. A widget adds some content to that page that is not static. Generally widgets are third party originated, though they can be home made. Widgets are also known as modules, snippets, and plug-ins.

Rich media, interactive entertainment widgets were first syndicated in large volume in 2001 by miniclip. Widgets are now commonplace and are used by bloggers, social network users, auction sites and owners of personal web sites. They exist on home page sites such as iGoogle, Netvibes, Pageflakes, SpringWidgets and yourminis. Widgets are used as a distribution method by ad networks such as Google’s AdSense, by media sites such as Flickr, by video sites such as YouTube and by hundreds of other organizations.

Applications can be integrated within a third party website by the placement of a small snippet of code. This is becoming a distribution or marketing channel for many companies. The code brings in ‘live’ content – advertisements, links, images – from a third party site without the web site owner having to update.

Hope this helps.

Re: Banners and Such?

Thanks Cindy but I had to literally read that about 4 times before I could completely understand it! It's pretty obvious that you work with computers. I know how to surf the internet to find out the info I need but that's about it. I did find your explanation pretty interesting. So if I understand you correctly, one of the most common widgets would be an ad? And some of these are made available to the public where we can add it too our "signature" when we post on message boards. Fans of whatever show, book, etc. think it's cool and the ad agency gets free advertising. So what is the difference between that and a banner? Is it because you can make your own banner and it doesn't move?

Re: Banners and Such?

A banner pretty much stay in place. A widget has countdown, and books you can preview. Both you can put on a web page. IE" My Space, Google, Frapper, etc.

A banner is long in size. A widget is more square in shape.

Hope this helps.
