Pet peeve at a book store!

Is it just me but has anyone else noticed that the "pocket books" have gotten larger, (about the size of a hard cover but has a soft cover).

Now this don't usually bug me, when I can get the book I want/need in the smaller size, but this is not the case anymore. It seams like they put out certain books in the big size and then don't make it in the pocket size.

Since I buy atleast 6 books a month it can get alittle pricey. So instead of being able to buy 6 books I can only buy 3.

I was just wondering if publishers are trying to make the books bigger and take out the pocket novels all together.

What does everyone else think?

Re: Pet peeve at a book store!

I always thought those larger ones had the larger print..which I like because I am old and bigger print is better:) Seems like that isn't the case anymore.
I did notice that Lucy Monroe has the larger book..didn't notice that the type was that much larger..but the price sure was:)

Re: Pet peeve at a book store!

The books you're talking about are called trade paperbacks or something. Those medieval halfbooks I do with Hannah come out in those at first and then come out a year later in normal pocket sized paperbacks so the deal is, if you wait, they'll come out in the cheaper format. There was some nonsense to explain it as an attempt to increase sales, but the truth is I think it just increases the money the publisher gets. But that's just my opinion

Re: Pet peeve at a book store!

Sounds like it to me too Lynsay :) Sometimes I will buy them if they are the larger print ones...ever since my cataract surgery I really have a hard time seeing up close. When I was severly nearsided I had no problem...Now I have thinner lenses...but have a hard time reading. I need to go buy some reading glasses.

Re: Pet peeve at a book store!

They've recently started putting out my historicals in hardcover. They usually come out well after the normal books are pubbed but are larger print. They're also more expensive. I've seen these magnifying things made to put over a novel page. Buying that once seems a better deal to me than having to pay so much more money on every book.

Gees, here am I trying to talk people out of buying books, lol. Well, actually, not really. I'm just trying to find ways for you to avoid spending the extra money. It's not like you get more story, and how much can extra pages cost?

I'll see if I can find that magnifying thing again. Of course, I saw it when not looking for it, so now that I'm trying to find it I probably won't. I think that's one of Murphy's laws (grin) If I do though, I'll post what I find out about here.

Lynsay, who suspects she'll be needing one of those things herself soon enough

Re: Pet peeve at a book store!

Well there is always at least one good thing about everything and in this case its that you can fit more books in your bookcase as they are thinner yet taller.... lol

Re: Pet peeve at a book store!

Do a search using the words full page magnifier. One of the hits I received was for virtualvillage.com and they had one for $6.99 plus $3.99 shipping. I think I've seen it before in person too. Walgreens perhaps?

Something else that came up with a search just using the word magnifier was magnifier.sourceforge.net which you can go to and download Virtual Magnifying Glass, a free, open source, screen magnification program for Windows. I'm not sure exactly how this works but it sounds interesting for those who have trouble reading.

Re: Pet peeve at a book store!

Thanks you guys for watching out for these old eyes of mine..Kim I will check out the full page magnifying thingy. The windows one is already installed in xp...I used it when I had to wait for glasses after my surgery...it works pretty good..except it is not full page you have to move it over the text you want to read. To see it go to Program Files/accessories/magnifier.
Lynsay I don't mind buying hardcovers because they last forever.Hubby makes a good living so I can afford them too...untill he retires ;) I just had to replace some of Jude Deveroux paperbacks because the pages were falling out...Thank Goodness they had just reprinted the 4 books I was looking for. Here in AZ thngs dry out so bad..and my walk-in closet gets pretty warm in the summer and that is where my books are..the binding glue dries out after a while.

Thanks again :)
