Do You Write?

Do any of you write? I was just curious. Lynsay, obviously you do, or we wouldn't be here but what about the rest of you?

I've been told by several people that I should and I've always wanted to but I'd be too scared to show what I wrote to anyone.

I learned very early on that any time I really worked at writing, people would accuse me of plagiarism. The teachers always told me that what I had written was too good to have been written by me.

The first time it happened I was twelve and it happened all the way through highschool until I finally just stopped writing

I guess I shouldn't have let them scare me away from it, but I was so hurt by it, it was easier to just shut it down.

Now the only writing I do is poetry on occasion. Usually when a friend loses a loved one. Then I will write a piece of poetry to encourage them. Other than that I just bury the urge to write out of the fear.

Re: Do You Write?

Lynsay is not posting here, she is biting her tongue and not smacking Sheri up the side of the head, or even ranting about teachers and the damage they can do without meaning too or even -- often -- realizing it.

Re: Do You Write?

Sheri....Give those Teachers a and keep on writing...if you get enjoyment out of it then you should do it.

Re: Do You Write?

I write nearly every day. Writing is my therapy. I have a few long novels finished and many more novella length works and too many unfinished pieces. I have never sought an audience or a publisher. Writing is very private for me and creating the characters and shaping their destinies is very cathartic. I can't seem to manage any kind of diary or blog. I am not certain I know why. Probably because it is easier to deal with a dysfunctional character than my own messed up self.

Re: Do You Write?

Sheri ducks for fear that Lynsay will change her mind about not slapping her upside of the head

Re: Do You Write?

Writing is great for catharsis. I find it very therapeutic myself too.

Re: Do You Write?

I write fanfiction but that's about it.

Re: Do You Write?

I guess you could say I write. I've written two (now published YEAH!!!!!) poems, and one 'short' story that I've gotten to where a conflict or something should start happing but I'm stuck and nothin's workin' out.

And it's not just teachers that do that kind of damage, parents/caretakers can do it too. Can't tell you howmany of thoes I wanted to slap at my old job, a painting shop, where parents would tell there kids "you don't want to put purple on your dog, why don't you do brown" or "the sky's not (insert color here) use blue instead" and the like. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Do You Write?

Sad but true Theresa, parents/caretakers do it too. However, they don't make parents take parenting courses, but one would hope in the teaching courses, teachers are taught to encourage creativity and self esteem and not stomp on it....Okay, I admit it, I'm an optimist.

Re: Do You Write?

Sadly Lynsay, at least here in Tx, teachers don't teach anymore. They teach what is on the state mandated test (I think it's now called the TASK test). As far as ecourging creativity, what teacher has the time? They can't teach the stuff that the schools/state says they have to teach because they can't control the little darlings. *sigh*

Re: Do You Write?

I write very much of the time. Problem is I have so many books im working on at once i cant get any done, though, i've come very close and i may just meet my December deadline (that i set for myself sense i dont have a publisher XD). English teachers aren't that bad on the whole thing i think. They're encouraging but i cant really tell if they're being honest considering they're probably not allowed to discourage me. *shrug* what ever the matter Mrs. Winters is the best motivation i have. I accually was talking to her about finding a publisher the other day. She thinks my best option is probably looking for a genre publisher, which i have no problem with considreing all my stories are pretty much science fiction (vampires, ghosts, Hades)

i started a new one now. I was tired of reading so many bad things about Hades so i looked up a lot of stuff and decided sense most of his evil doings are just implied i'm going to turn him into a good guy. S'not like he wanted to rule the underworld anyway. ^_^ it'll take me so long to finish though, not a big priority.

With that being said i dont feel cnofidant enough that I could write full time so im going to a community college studying to become a physical therapy aide... dramatic shift in my life but i hope it wors out.

Re: Do You Write?

*blink blink* ah, yea that's rpobably it, my dad and grandmother are very suportive of my writing. Course grandmother thinks i should publish books of poetry...

Re: Do You Write?

Circe - Be glad it's not my father you're having to put up with. I wrote a poem that I detacated to the 7 astronauts of the Columbia Shuttle (a big event considering I live outside of Houston). With the recent return to flight my father, who's been proud of it since day one, -=REALLY=- started on a rampage about getting the poem to the NASA community. Long story short, I think I may have succeeded in it, pluss it's going to be in the Oct. issue of Boeing's newsletter. Now if I could just stop him from giving out copies of the poem to darn near everyone that looks at him funny, I'll be in good shape!

Re: Do You Write?

Hi:

I'm new on the boards. I've just started reading Lynsay's A Quick Bite...only at Ch. 2 and I love her ideas!

I try to read but it's been cut back a lot, because I'm writing a novel. A paranormal romance, light. I don't read many dark and gloomy paranormals. Though there are some excellent writers out there, I just can't get through a novel of scary paranormal.

I have admired Lynsay's previous novels, and she's one of my inspirations to make an attempt. But practice makes perfect.

I have had a few short stories published, and once in a while used to work sporadically on my novel writing. I'm getting more serious about it.

Circe and the rest who write. Keep writing!!!

Judith

Re: Do You Write?

As I said over in the other thread, Welcome Judith! Always good to see more people who write!

Oh, and I know I kinda mentioned this befor, but tribute to Columbia and my poem about Pres. Regan are both in my college's chapbook, and the Columbia poem was published in the Nov., not Oct., edition of Houston's divistion of Boeing's newsletter.

......and Dad continues on his rampage.
