Re: June book club selection

Thanks Lynsay,
I'll check it out:) Boy this desert weather is weird...Last week it was 110 degrees F and today it is in the mid 85F(29C):)

Re: June book club selection

Ouch, I think I'd rather have the 85 degrees than the 110. Hope you have air conditioning Jaquie

Re: June book club selection

Oh yes AC's or Swamp box Coolers are a neccesity in the Az Desert.....The pool in the backyard helps allot too:)

Re: June book club selection

Well, could be worse...could live on the Gulf Coast. Tripple digit heat and humidity. Nasty, nasty stuff. As far as the book club, I'll pop over and check it out.

Re: June book club selection

We lived in Florida for 6 years I don't remember having to many triple digits but it was bad enough in the 90's:) Our Monsoons start in July...then we get the humidity...All I can say is Thank Goodness for AC:)

Lynsay I remember a heat wave in England when we lived there it was in the high 80's and people were dropping like flies in London. We lived in East Anglia and it stayed pretty nice on warm days all we needed was a fan. Where I live now the 80's are nice Spring numbers:)

Re: June book club selection

Ah, but they don't have air conditioning over here, and the older houses don't have windows that open properly, they are the big bottom windows that don't open at all and the small upper windows swing inward a few inches so that the breeze, if there is any, doesn't get in. The houses become hot boxes, ugh.

Fortunately, we have HUGE windows that actually open so a breeze can run through, but I've been in the hot box houses and can see why they were dropping like flies.

Re: June book club selection

We lived in a two hundred year old cottage. It still had the original stones...and very small. the summers weren't to bad because I could open the living room window and the kitchen window, and get a breeze through.. The thing I hated about it is they built on to it and used cinder block and no insulation...so when we went up stairs we had to wrap the kids like they were going outside just to take them to bed.....two of the bedrooms belonged to the old part and stayed tepid....One bedroom was the built on...we used paraffin heaters(hated the smell) It was an experience(we even had mice ) but I loved the countryside. After my third child was born we finally got into base housing...which had most of the stuff we had in America. I wouldn't have given up those two and a half years in the country for anything though. England will always have a special place in my heart

Re: June book club selection

Hello All,

I just came wandering in from Kelley Armstrong's site to see what was up in Lynsay's home territory.

It seems the hot topic of conversation here is old houses and lack of ventilation. Umm... my house is only 11 years old and has lots of windows and good insulation and... I guess I can't really complain at all. Of course, there are no 200 year old houses in my neighbourhood and the weather is rarely too cold or too hot.

I am in SW Washington state, about 20 miles north of Portland, Oregon.

Re: June book club selection

Hi Laura,
I now live in Az in a house with Great insulation and double paned windows. My Husband is retired Military so we have lived in a few places. England was a treat...the only bad thing was hubby didn't have much rank so there wasn't allot of money to travel...although we did make it to Paris for a long weekend without the kids:) We are retired from the AF and Hubby is now a teacher at a Local Community College...and we are settled back home in Az:) I was born in Spokane and lived in Newport for the first 7 years of my life...I still remember some parts of that life. Have some cousins that live in the Seattle... Bremerton area. They grew up in Belfair.
