Actually, I used to live in a few. While there are pockets of non-assimilation (Chinatowns, etc.) the demographics in urban areas reveal them to be overwhelmingly leftist. This is where the terms blue state and red state originates from. This is no secret and your "different traditions" are superficial ones, tolerated as long as the supremacy of the state and the rituals of "democracy" (endlessly bickering over the distribution of loot) are maintained. Large government intrusions are deemed necessary to maintain order among all these "different traditions". Restaurants, "art", coffee shops, museums, drug dealers, hookers, homeless bums, etc. and charming street fairs are no threat to the elites. They are bread and circuses. Science discoveries are available online, one no longer has to travel to cities to obtain info or go to school.
