Back pain from running

About 10 years ago I suffered and injury that left me with a herniated disc L5-S1. I was successfully treated at that time with cortisone shots. About 3 years ago the sciatica and back pain re occurred and I was miserable for about 2 months. I had put on a few pounds so I vowed to take my physical well being much more seriously. I started exercising and over the last 3 years have lost about 30 lbs.

About 2 weeks ago however I started having sciatica/ back pain again. I've been doing my inversion therapy (boots) and going to the chiropractor for treatment. He suggested to me that I STOP running. This is ludicrous to me. Running is what was keeping me healthy, right? That being said he suggested that I pay very close attention to my form while running. he also noted that my left hamstring was much weaker than the right hamstring. and suggested some exercises.

On my very next run I paid close attention to my form. I did notice a significant flaw in the symmetry of my stride when I got tired. I have been very successful at correcting the flaw in my form, however here is my dilemma.

My sciatica/back pain has actually gotten worse. Was my Chiropractor right? Am I going to have to stop running? I sure hope not. I'm just starting to get good at it.

Devon

You need to stop running right now until you get that pain sorted out.

Start reading some of my previous postings.

I used to a lot of running: up and down hills in Scotland with 45 lb packs on my back.

It messed me up very badly.

Try the Lose The Back Pain program.

You will need to send in photos of yourself as they prescribe.

IF YOU CARRY ON RUNNING JUST NOW, YOU WILL SERIOUSLY HURT YOURSELF.

Over the last two years, I have worked with over a hundred people suffering from back pain.

Of the ones who have followed EVERY last suggestion that I have made, all are at least 90% pain free.

Several are 100% pain free.

I have recovered from a herniated disk, degenerated disks and a severely damaged sacro-iliac joint.

All without surgery.

Re: Back pain from running

Bye the way, I know how much running means to you.

It was a way of life for me.

If I couldn't run for a day or two, I got "itchy".

Then it was on to weights.

Same situation.

Now I swim.

Believe me, if you put enough effort into it, swimming can give you as good a "burn" or "runners's high" as running can.

Takes all the strain off your joints.

If you have one hamstring tighter than the other, you are setting yourself up for a bunch of things, including a possible hip replacement later [ torqueing action of muscle imbalance causes massive pressure on the acetabalum or hip bone socket ].
