Being overweight can cause a range of health problems from diabetes to hear conditions.

When we have back pain, the situation is made worse. Firstly, extra weight presses on joints and because we feel depressed when we have back pain, many of us tend to eat more than we should. This is a very difficult problem, as it can become a vicious circle.

The thing is that most diets fail because we half-starve ourselves, don't feel full and then "binge" in the fridge at the week-ends.

One of the keys is to eat a lot of fiber. You can start off slowly by having things like bran flakes at breakfast. They'll swell up and make you feel more full.

Always drink a big glass of water before eating anything. If you don't like the taste [ or lack of taste ] from 2% milk, mix some regular and 2% together.

Start off with small changes. If you can't stop eating desserts, make sure you eat an apple or pear or orange or something before you eat the cake. You will eat less cake that way.

If you eat a lot of Mcdonalds, KFC etc, you MUST cut down on it. Don't be fooled by the new "trans fat free" Mcdonald's food - it is still filled with hormones, antibiotics and other junk, and still soaked in grease. Again, you don't have to go "cold turkey", instead of eating at Mcdonalds three times a week, eat there twice and at subway once [ keep away from mayo though - very, very bad ].

If you don't like the taste of oatmeal, mix in fruit, nuts, even some chocolate to get you started.

Remember, you only have to take small steps to help yourself.

Much better that you take some oatmeal with something sweet than just something sweet on it's own.

Just a quick clarification, when the map counts up to 1997 and it changes for dark blue to a more yellow color that is just the color change from one percentage block to the next higher one...

Over the last while, I've been eating two or three slices of "Arnold's Flax and Fiber" bread every day.

You can get it all over Florida in Publix supermarkets. I'd imagine you can get it elsewhere too.

Very impressed with this. One slice gives you 4 g of dietary fiber. All natural. One of the great things is that it helps you go to the bathroom for a bowel movement every day.

As I wrote in a previous post about fiber and water , regularity is very important.

There are many cases of people whose main cause of back pain is that they don't have regular bm's.

Also, it helps you keep full.

You should be going at least once a day.
