Numbness in front of thigh

I think I may have Meralgia Parasthetica. I have has various episodes of back pain over the years, ever since my first pregnancy when my right thigh became painful and numb. eventually had an emergency discectomy at L5-S1 for Cauda Equina. After this I was pain free for 8 yrs until 2 yrs ago when I got the thigh numbness again. Mri showed several changes, but no surgery indicated. I have had physio, chiropractic, pilates, LTBP system, exercise, more physio, inversion (get the picture?). Well, doing some internet research, I put in al my symptoms and they perfectly matched Meralgia Parasthetica, which is entrappment of the anterior femoral nerve. One cause is pregnancy ( which is when mine started) and overweight. I have put 2st on in past 3yrs. Still not grossly overweight at BMI of 28, but I feel it is enough to put pressure on this nerve. I'm going to speak to my physio at the hospital next week- I hate it when people come in to me ( I'm a nurse) with printouts from the internet- but I'm desperate enough to take that chance. Does anyone else have similar symptoms? If so, did loosing weight help? Apperently, there is no guarantee that it will, because the nerve can be irreversably damaged. I'm a bit despondant at the moment, although I do intend to continue the exercises.

Re: Numbness in front of thigh

Hi Kathryn

All I can tell you from my experience with a cold numb quadriceps muscle, is that my cold numbness was down to the rectus femoris

The rectus femoris had lost size because the iliopsoas had became to over active, therefor the nerves were working fine, but the muscle wasn't working and therefor less blood supply and a cold leg

That was the case with me anyway

Re: Numbness in front of thigh

Kathryn,
I have a herniated disc, and and have numbness to the side and top of my left thigh, and have done so for a few months. I have been told I have the same problem (Meralgia Parasthetica). I wish there was something I could say to make things easier for you, but I think you have to keep trying as you have clearly been doing. I know how disponding things can get, but please stay strong and God willing you will get through all this.

Re: Numbness in front of thigh

It is the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve that is entrpped and has a very specific oblong circle that encompasses anterior to lateral thigh. It is just sensation so it may feel numb but not normally painful. You are problably closer witht he weight gain. Go to an experienced manual therapist that can evaluate you for a pelvic problem. Your L% disk S1 root feed the back of the leg..
