"LOOKING FOR BACK PAIN RELEIF?" TAKE THIS SIMPLE TEST...
The test:
Do it slowly and in control this may not be for everyone so do it at your own pace and risk.
and no you can not hold on falling backwards is also failing.
I call it taking a dump in the woods. (shoes off) feet shoulder width apart toed out a little. Squat down keeping your heels flat see how far down you can go. Did you feel any restriction or if you cant get down you failed the test and its likely that you have at least one muscle imbalance. If you were able to get down it does not mean that you are in the clear but that it will take more testing to find the imbalances.
That was fun let me know how you did and if you have any more questions let me know.
If you did fail the test it is likly that muscles imbalances are in some way preventing you from getting better.
The trick to getting back pain relief is to Identify the muscle Imbalances. Which muscles are tight and which are weak and than do very targeted exercises to correct the imbalances. The only problem is that you have to identify the imbalances first and that is hard to do if you do not know what it look for…
Often times the medical community does not have time to do it. In fact there is not an (ICD9) BILLING code for it so you know that its not going to get done… ant that a crock…
You ask what is so important about muscle imbalances. Our hips and spine are supported and controlled by our muscles and if over time and or trauma those muscles are get tight or weak the position of our hips and spine will get pulled out of position and that will cause SCIATICA, DISK HERNIATION, ARTHRITIS AND PULLED BACK MUSCLES and the list go on and on.
Take the test and post you thoughts what ever they are………
Thanks
Steve

Re: "LOOKING FOR BACK PAIN RELEIF?" TAKE THIS SIMPLE TEST...
Hi Steve
I tried this and it is a really good test. Personally I found I can do the full squat, but it gets pretty difficult at the bottom of the movement. This is because I have limited flexibility in my Achilles heals (more so on the right heal). I have the feeling of almost falling backwards because of this.
Cheers

Of course you can Jeremy you have been working on on correcting you imbalances for over a year now... and that is great... in fact that should give hope to those who need to start working on ther imbalances
But tell me this is that a good position to be able to get into and really get a good stretch without pain or restriction?

Thanks Steve
I am very happy to see your reply. In our country no body takes so much care of others. I personly think that at last i have found the caring people.
AS i am out of USA, so you have to help me in combating my illness.
1. Today i perform the said test. I failed totaly due to sevear stfness in my back.
2. Moreover When I try to sit on ground with my soals of both feet facing each other ,i feel great dificulty and i feel pain and a sevear streach and stiffness in my lower back.
3. I also have pain in my left below scapular area. of and on.
4. When i sit on a chair and just relaxing my back i started pain in my lower back above pelvis and i actually feel as if there is a tight belt around my back. but actually there is nothing outside.
5. I have stated all my position.Kindly help me in analyzing my condition and working me out my musle imbalance.
also sugest me the daily frequency of stretching and exercises.
I thanks you once again.

Re: "LOOKING FOR BACK PAIN RELEIF?" TAKE THIS SIMPLE TEST...
Ouch!!
Could go as far as thighs paralell to the floor where upon v tight at base of lumbar spine.
Is that the spinae errectors? (excuse spelling)Is there a strectch to help this or is likely to be more complicated than that?
I told my Physio about your site and he said that muscle testing for imbalances and stretching and so on was fantastic for rehab, but said that first we should control the pain before setting out on excercises.
What do you think?
Thx

Re: "LOOKING FOR BACK PAIN RELEIF?" TAKE THIS SIMPLE TEST...
We too belive that you have to control the pain before you can start a well balances program...
HOWEVER: We may have just stumbled on an Oxymoron.
How do you decrease pain with out correcting the problem? The effects of the imbalances is cause of the pain.
That is why we recommend that people who are not going to Physical Therapy get a massage to break the pain-spasm cycle.
As for you failing the test make sure that the PT is having you do the correct targeted exercises to address your imbalances. That you have just proved to yourself you have..
This goes to the rest of you out there, how long are you willing to wait for someone else to make decisions about you plan of care? How long are you willing to wait till someone else starts a corrective program for you.
The best thing for to do is to educate your self and be able to make informed decisions about you care...

My Physio is trying to break the pain cycle and I have had an epidural 3 weeks ago to assist but it's no magic bullet.
I really want to begin rehab but can't get past the pain - its been everyday since last Summer. Some days better than others!

The test is not meant as a exercises that you should do daily but it is a very passive activity and there in no harm in doing it if there is no after effect or pain with the motion...

To answer your question (I think you were asking me) yes it is now a comfortable position for me and it does feel good for me to stretch that way. Esspecially after working in the yard all day or something like that.

Re: "LOOKING FOR BACK PAIN RELEIF?" TAKE THIS SIMPLE TEST...
I have been having lower back pain on and off for about 3 years...and this weekend is the worst!! I took your test and it was painful, but I was able to do it. I am very active - weights and yoga each week. I thought yoga was supposed to help with alignment and balancing my body, but sometimes it makes it worse (especially forward bends). Why is that? I am losing hope with the exercise/stretching routine!! Chiropractic and acupuncture have only been of limited help, too. I am so frustrated!!

Re: "LOOKING FOR BACK PAIN RELEIF?" TAKE THIS SIMPLE TEST...
Thanks steve once again,
I am following your and Jesse cannone ,s adviceses through this web and E mail.
For the last ten days i am not doing any exercises and reassesing my problems and condition.
kindly clear the following points.
1.In my Email Jesse has answered that if you find one hip is higher than the other , make a note of it. Then begin lightly stretching the following areas.
. Inner thighs
. hip flexors
. quadiceps
. glutes
Now of which side? or of both sides.
as side is not mentioned.
In another reply in forum for the high right pelvis you has advised to laterly bend or stretch to left. Are these ( laterly bend or stretch to the left)are the same things. Is it means that we have to bend to the left. and how many times.
Also in the forum in someons reply it is advised for high hip on rightside
. Piriform stretch
. Hamstring stretch
. side bends
All these are confusing.
You please clear the situations.

Please let us know how you are doing with the test!!!
Can you do it?
Is it hard to keep you feet flat?
Do you feel pain?
Can you get all the way down?
Does it feel good?
Does this help you understand muscle imbalances if you can not do it.

Re: "LOOKING FOR BACK PAIN RELEIF?" TAKE THIS SIMPLE TEST...
I was diagnosed with a bulging disc about 8 years ago. I am now 36 years old and in January starting experiencing severe pain down my left leg. I went to the Dr. and took an MRI to discover the the bulging disc is now herniated and is aggravating the nerve. I spent 3 week in PT and all they did was show me a couple stretches, traction, and put me on ice. It is now March and my pain is slowly getting better. I am taking muscle relaxers and anti inflammatories. My pain seems to be worse at night when I try and sleep. Are there some stretches that can be done before bedtime to alleviate some of the pain? I go and see a back specialist on the 31st. I did order the video today and I look forward to receiving.

Re: "LOOKING FOR BACK PAIN RELEIF?" TAKE THIS SIMPLE TEST...
For the past four years I have had a throbbing pain in the top of both legs which gets extremely bad when I climb stairs and also when I sit for long periods of time. Walking is extemely hard since my upper legs bother me. Since February my lower back has started to bother me also, which never bothered me much before. This problem started with the pain in the top back of both legs when sitting on hard surfaces and the stairs but I could still walk without too much discomfort. The doctors have been unable to tell me what is causing this. I have had all tests and tried other things. Do you think this is a muscle imbalance?I have not injured my back. I am doing all the back exercises and periformus stretch.

Re: "LOOKING FOR BACK PAIN RELEIF?" TAKE THIS SIMPLE TEST...
Well I failed miserably!! You gave me this test when I emailed you a while ago, It feels as if my calfs are restricting me, very poor dorsiflexion and also my hamstrings are taught so its both my calfs and hams that are stopping me from being able to do it. I can do it the "Wussy way" using the door handle and get all the way to the floor no problem at all, sometimes a nice lower back stretch is felt. If i was to let go I would fall flat on my back as my knees are directly above my ankles so all my weight is shifted backwards.

Hi Steve, I'm a new kid on the block. Found your site. Did a pile of reading & "WHEW' it keeps me busy. I have ordered your disk & waiting to receive. Also was on your teleseminar. I found your "squat" test. Was able to get my butt within a foot of the floor. Had a lot of pull at both ankles & shin area. Back not too bad. How far down is one to go to pass the test? I have been unable to find the 2nd test that is mentioned. Must remember that I have failed back surgery & have a Spinal Cord Stimulater. Am scheduled for a fusion but hoping that with your exercise system, help, & inversion table I will not need the fusion. Am I setting my sites too high? Heather

Re: Re: "LOOKING FOR BACK PAIN RELEIF?" TAKE THIS SIMPLE TEST...
Hi Heather,
Just to say i think it is great you are setting your sights high .Personally i have found what works is to set big goals then break it down into more manageable smaller steps. Try whatever works for you, listen to your body and take it steady to begin with. You are clearly motivated to do what you can to help yourself as much as possible. If you have read everything on the website you will be pretty well informed!
I am sure you will have received the program by now, which will help you identify your imbalances and corrective exercises. If you do want to do the other test Steve mentions here it is called "Think you dont have muscle imbalances, take my quick test and feel the difference".
Anyway just wanted to wish you all the best

I tried the test and could go down just fine, but can't get up without pulling mmyself up with a chair.
Severe pain in right buttock down to foot. Atrophied muscle in right buttock is quite visible as well. Am going for MR Neurography tomorrow - am beside myself with pain.
Do you know of a good PT in San Diego?

I know I'm kinda late responding to this post, but I have a question if you are out there. I could not do your test with my feet flat, only on the balls of my feet with my heals up (I could go all the way down this way, but not very far with flat feet). Should I assume that I failed? Just curious...

Re: "LOOKING FOR BACK PAIN RELEIF?" TAKE THIS SIMPLE TEST...
Do you really need me to answer that? But what is more important is what action are you going to do about it?
Do you know what need to be done to fix your imbalances and do you want to get better.
I set up this test to have people realize that imbalances are very mild in some of not all cases and once you know that you indeed have muscle imbalances you can now take action to correct them and that is what our program is all about…

Are you supposed to keep your back straight while doing this test? I am able to squat down if I lean forward towards the end. Getting up is harder (maybe due to week leg muscles). Back felt very tight afterwards. My sciatic pain is on the right side (butt and down to the calf).

Since I have scoliosis and a compressed disc I have varying rounds of sciatics and lower back pains.

Hi Steve,
Wish I could take your test, but I'm Spinal Cord Injured for 14 yrs now (I'm 39) and have all-of-sudden now having "A LOT" of pain in my lower back and right leg.
I did break L 3 & 4 as well as T-6-7. I have walking braces which I use regularly in stead of my wheelchair when I can.
I have seen a pain specialist and have had shots in my lower back but It hasn't worked.
I did have an MRI which showed narrowing of my lower spine.
Please, Please, Please, Help me!
Thanks,
Paul
