My "mustang" stallion ...Midas
First...let me say...this is a really great website! It's nice to have a place to come to view information on natural horsemanship and ask questions. Now..let me tell you about my "mustang".. His name is Midas and he came from a huge ranch out west...a 4000 acre one to be exact. He is what you would call a "range pony",and had very little handling by humans. He grew up in a 650 acre "paddock" with other stallions and geldings, directly after being weaned at about 4 months. He was over 4 years old when he arrived at my farm. I had owned several stalions before I opted to take him on, or I wouldnt have considered it at all. (Well...it wasnt all head knowledge...I saw a photo of him and fell in love! ) When Midas first arrived, he was only able to lead...and that he did well...oddly. He was very nervous however. All went well the first few days...until I tried to get a lead rope back on him..and there was just NO WAY that was going to happen. Fortunatley for me...I have had some experience with Parelli with 2 previous horses, and had a Parelli stick and string...so I began there...playing the friendly game with it. It took about a month and then he was ready to have a lead on. I had to leave the halter on him ( a regular one,..not a rope one) because I couldnt get near enough to his face to take it off. I did a LOT or approach and retreat until he would accept the lead rope fairly willingly. That I thought was a major accomplishement...until I came out one day to find he had gotten his halter off! NOW I was really going to have to have savy and use the natural horsemanship skills to the max! I started again with the Parelli stick and string, playing the friendly game..as I had been all along...but this time I focused more on his head and getting him used to that feel...I was able to actually use the string part of it to simulate a rope halter. It wasnt all that long and he was accepting that as well and so, I approached him with a rope halter and to my shock...he put his nose right in it!!!! Well...it was easy sailing from then on in, because... as you have discovered with your mustang, Hondo...that once they know something is OK they are happy to move on!They actually look forward to it and want it! Midas went very quickly forward from that point on to doing all the 7 games...and accepting the friendly games with the stick and string...even having it flung over his back or around his head. His attitude has never changed toward me ...being a willing partner and wanting to know what I want. I NEVER at any point rushed him along but waited until he was ready. My "payment" for all that patience is that he is now letting me...no...WANTING me to ride him! Bareback! There is NO OTHER FEELING greater in the World then having a horse like that WANT to be with you!!!!! Thankyou natural horsemanship people for making it all possible! Angie |
