Welcome to the Less Is More Forum. This forum is to post questions, comments, suggestions, ideas, principles, concepts and ideas regarding Natural Horsemanship and more importantly, the philosophy of "Less IS More". This is a place where like-minded people can come to throw away all the old traditional ways of training, and riding, and begin to experience a new FREEDOM in their relationship with their equine partners. Whether your goal is to learn more about natural horsemanship, get support for your own personal Less Is More belief, find solutions for problems that are hindering your relationship, begin a journey of discovery or healing, this is your home. Regardless of what the current "fads" are in traditional circles or natural horsemanship circles, I encourage you to think 'outside the box'. Feel free to post a message.

Custom Saddles for 3 yr olds?

Once again I am looking for a saddle for my boy. I was thinking about getting a custom one with Crest Ridge Saddlery but I know he is still growing, so should I not get custom at this age? Thanks.

Re: Custom Saddles for 3 yr olds?

Being your boy is 3 yr Old, like you said he is still growing and will keep growing for a few more years.

Being a Saddle fitter my self and a Equine Sports Massage Therapist, I would get a light weight saddle until he is done growing.

Then you can get a saddle fitter to do a template of his back and order a custom saddle for him when he is done growing.

Re: Custom Saddles for 3 yr olds?

I like both of these saddles, they are light weight but hold up great. I have had my Big horn Cordura for 12 years and it still looks brand new.
I Would also recomend getting a rounded skirt for the first time saddle for your young horse.
The prices I have are for new saddles, but you can shop around and get them for a lot less, The only thing is make sure they are not twisted or do not have broken tree's if you go with a used one.

Big Horn Cordura Saddle $299.99
The Abetta With Cordura leather $255

Yep, I think I'm going to get a BigHorn. Everyone told me to get one in the beginning, and I almost did. For some reason, I didn't. Hopefully I can find one locally so I don't have to go through all of that shipping cost again. Thanks

Re: Custom Saddles for 3 yr olds?

yes check around your area, you might come up with a good deal. Also if you can go to a tack auction, some times you can pick up new Big horn saddles for a lot less and they are new.

What breed is your young horse. If he is part arab you might want to go with a the arab bar's or if he is part QH then go with the QH bars for his saddle.

I would also recomend getting a neroprean pad, because it will help with pressure points on his still growing spine and muscles of the back.

Re: Custom Saddles for 3 yr olds?

He is a tiny little Kentucky Mountain Saddle/TWH cross. Here's his ad picture (even though we bought his in April it's still up). http://agdirect.com/scripts/hrsdetl.exe?1172765723&0
He actually looks allot smaller in person.

We have an ABetta trail w/ full QH bars right now, that is huge on him and slips no matter how tight the girth. Before that we had a Fabtron gaited saddle the bars were flared in the back and there was 2 inches between the horse and the saddle (!) and in the front it pinched his little withers.

I have a Toklat wool felt blend pad that is 3/4 in thick, is that a good pad?
