Less Is More Horsemanship Forum
Welcome to the Less Is More Forum. This forum is to post questions, comments, suggestions, ideas, principles, concepts and ideas regarding Natural Horsemanship and more importantly, the philosophy of "Less IS More". This is a place where like-minded people can come to throw away all the old traditional ways of training, and riding, and begin to experience a new FREEDOM in their relationship with their equine partners. Whether your goal is to learn more about natural horsemanship, get support for your own personal Less Is More belief, find solutions for problems that are hindering your relationship, begin a journey of discovery or healing, this is your home. Regardless of what the current "fads" are in traditional circles or natural horsemanship circles, I encourage you to think 'outside the box'. Feel free to post a message.

LOOKING FOR AN ADOPTIVE FAMILY FOR HONDO

Hi Gang...

Well, it pains me to say this..

We are looking for an adoptive home for Hondo rather than have to return him to the BLM. Let me tell you all that I can about him.

Hondo is a 4 year old BLM mustang gelding from near the Wells, Nevada area.

He has a sweet personality. Loves to have his eyes rubbed , jowls rubbed and loves kisses and attention.

He sometimes will act a little flighty when introduced to new things...HOWEVER...it is only for a few seconds and after that he has the "been there, seen that, done that" attitude. He gets it the first time and then he is ready to move on to something else.

Right sided. Prefers for you to be on the right side but will allow handling on the left. he came to be completely right sided and it took me almost two weeks to get on his left. He is just about 50/50 right and left sided.

Can be caught in an open pasture. If he does begin to walk away, he will do so slowly and wait for you to say "whoa" and then he will stop and face and allow you to approach and halter. Halters and unhalters well.

Offers lateral flexion on both saides, vertical flexion and willdisengage hindquarters by direct pressure and indirect pressure.

Leads easily. Backs with both hand pressure and by wiggling the lead rope. Is respectful at gate, but if he should forget, just a little wiggle of the lead and he will give you space. Walks quietly through gates and is just now learning to disengage hindquarters and face you after going thorugh gate.

Can pick up and clean front feet with a tiny bit of effort (getting better daily) We are still working on the back feet.

Can fly spray him out in the open pasture without being haltered (have pictures to prove it) Can bathe with a garden hose and he liks to drink for the hose. Will allow you to groom him and brush his mane and tail.

Accepts wormer paste with no problems. Have been teaching him and preparing him for vet shots, and he is doing well. Does not mind handling of the ears and you can stick your fingers into his mouth and rub his bars.

Will now enter and play in the creek..water crossing no real problem. He is a water baby and loves it.

can flag all over with flag or plastic sack but will also move off of pressure with the sack. Can swing a training stick with progress string around him with same results. Can also spin lead rope and lariats around and over his head.

Has been mounted bareback and ridden once in the creek in deeper water (ALA Native American style of gentling and mounting)

Has been saddled and cinched and mounted but HAS NOT BEEN RIDDEN EXTENSIVELY! Just want to make that very clear...all the hard prep work has been done.

Finally turned out with my three mares...is doing very well on pasture. Has buddied up with one of my mares and recently we have noticed that my little lead mare doesnt seem to pay him much attention. They have already had that conversation once. he is rather submissive in a herd. Probably middle of the herd somewhere in ranking...although two of my three mares boss him around.

I can off anyone who emails tons of pics and video to prove anything we have written about him. He will make someone a phenomenal partner in just a few months time.

If interested, please email us or call us

Serious Adoptive families only. We are not adopting him on a "first come, first serve" we are looking for the right "natural" horse owner. Must meet ALL BLM requirements for adopting a mustang and meet all of my requirements for adopting him.

Please email or call...

Michael

Just wanted to congratulate you on your progress with Hondo, and to express my sadness at your decision. However I DO understand and respect your decision. I wish we had the room and need for another wonderful mustang, but at this point that just wouldn't be feasible! I know that with your wonderful start, Hondo has what it takes to make a great horse for just the right person.

Re: LOOKING FOR AN ADOPTIVE FAMILY FOR HONDO

I'm confused. I thought the mustangs for the Challenge were supposed to be in training until Sept. 22, and then compete against the others. All 100 mustangs would then be up for adoption on Sept. 23, after the competition. Why are you looking to adopt him out now?
