Treeless or Traditional?????

Hi,
Up until now I have been using my friend's saddle on my horse, but the time has come for me to get a saddle of my own. I am trying to decide between a treeless or a western saddle. I have read a lot about the benefits of a treeless, but I don't know how to choose what brand to get. My budget says that I need to get a saddle under $350. Is there a good treeless out there that I could get for that price? I know that the Torsion treeless are good, but I can't afford one of those. Also, what about western saddles with the traditional tree? I was thinking I would either get a Wintec or a Big Horn. Any suggestion on brands for wetern saddles and treeless saddles? Also, does anyone have any advice that would make my decision between western and treeless any easier?

Thanks,
Brittany

Re: Treeless or Traditional?????

well...I am probably not going to be of much help. LOL

I have only been on one treeless. At first, I thought it looked like an overstuffed bareback pad. I was turned off by the looks. After I sat it, I was much more impressed. I seriously considered getting one but just couldn't afford one. If I remember right, one of the treeless companies, maybe Torsion (?) had a try it before you buy it program. Do an internet search for treeless, I am sure you will find it.

I have a Big Horn synthetic saddle that I have had for years and years. I love it. I have started horses in it, been on rough trail, been underwater with it. It is still holding up. It isnt pretty, but it is functional for what I use it for and it is very comfortable for me and my horse never gets sore or has rub spots and thats the important part.

I have found that it fits about 95% of the horses that I play with. Anything other than that and a good wool pad fills up the slack.

Either way you go will be fine....however...make sure it fits your horse perfectly. Get someone kowledgable in saddle fit to check the saddle and your horse. Resist the urge to buy it beause it is a pretty saddle or you personally like the style. I once found this beautiful tobacco colored aussie style saddle. Man, it looked grat on my little paso, but didnt fit worth a flip. Regardless of tree or pad, it was just uncomfortable. So even though I LOVED that saddle, it had to go. My horse comes first.

As far as the saddle goes...it is ALWAYS about the horse. Make sure it fits right and you will eliminate a lot of problems for your horse right from the start.

Another consideration...what are you going to do with your horse while wearing that saddle? Trail ride? Compete? Leasurely stroll on a local trail, show? etc., etc.

Re: Treeless or Traditional?????

Thanks Michael,
I will probably end up getting a Big Horn. Can you recommend any good brands of wool pads? Also, what do you think of orthopedic pads?

Thanks again,
Brittany
