Welcome to the Less Is More Forum. This forum is to post questions, comments, suggestions, ideas, principles, concepts and ideas regarding Natural Horsemanship and more importantly, the philosophy of "Less IS More". This is a place where like-minded people can come to throw away all the old traditional ways of training, and riding, and begin to experience a new FREEDOM in their relationship with their equine partners. Whether your goal is to learn more about natural horsemanship, get support for your own personal Less Is More belief, find solutions for problems that are hindering your relationship, begin a journey of discovery or healing, this is your home. Regardless of what the current "fads" are in traditional circles or natural horsemanship circles, I encourage you to think 'outside the box'. Feel free to post a message.

Separation?

Hi Guys

I was watching the videos and a question came to mind. Is it better to separate the horse from other horses in the beginning while you try to build a bond, so that they build a bond with you. Also is it essential that you have a closed in area, square pen, or does the pasture work. Can I close the pasture off with a electric fence (yellow tape kind without the electricity) if the horse acknowledges the fence. If so how big of an area (? X ?) should be sectioned off?

I know sometimes I get caught up on the details but sometimes those details help quite a bit.

Thanks
Yolande

Re: Separation?

Hi....well...

no, you dont have to separate the horses.

However, it is a good idea to play with your horse in a separate area. The reason is so that you nor the horse will be too distracted and should your horse get away from you, they are in an enclosed area. Just makes catching them and staying focused a little easier.

Now that doesn't mean you cant work in your pasture...I do it all of the time. I may be out in the pasture fly spraying the girls and might slip on a halter and do a quick two minutes of groundwork. Just something simple to see where we are. No biggie. I have done full lessons out in the pasture as well. If the opportunity presents itself, go fir it. Just dont make a big deal out of it. It is no different than being in the arena or paddock.
