Metronidazole

I almost lost my Weim to metronidazole toxicity and it was the end to a very successful agility career.
The side effect to metronidazole is paralysis. He had taken it many times before with no problems; he was on it for clostridium that he and many other dogs got at an agility trial. Within a few hours he went from running in the backyard to needing 24 hour care. He could do nothing on his own, he was paralyzed from the waist down. He had 5 major seizures and was hospitalized on IVs for 3 days. It took almost one year to get him back to some normalcy and a lot of detoxing and alternative treatments.
It has now been 1-1/2 years since it occurred and he still has a limp in his left rear. His rear is still very weak and I doubt he will ever be back 100%. And we are talking about a dog that was as solid as they come, conformation and attitude.

From what I am told, it is one of the few antibiotics that pass the brain barrier and it actually caused his brain to swell. He still has noise sensitivity issues from this.

The sad thing is the vets know about it, but they don't seem to inform us. I had to take him to the Emergency Clinic and the vet on call diagnosed him without even looking at him. So it is more common than what we think.

As you can see, this is very personal to me and I hope no one else has to go through it.
Please use it with caution and only if absolutely necessary.

We now use pumpkin (100% pure canned pumpkin), which works wonders and no side effects!
