I've always had a tendency to be claustrophobic, but it didn't really bother me until I tried to swim across a small sheltered backwater of the Rhine - an incredibly stupid thing to do! - and I panicked when half way across. It was in a nudist colony and I remember a number of people just looking at me in mild interest while I struggled in the water. Eventually I got myself to an island and made a raft to help me back again.
I took me a long time (and a lot of unhelpful advice from doctors and psychologists) before I was able to cope with normal life again. I still have some qualms about planes, lifts and trains, but otherwise I'm fine |
