Hi Mike,
That sounds so similar to what happened to me. My first panic was in a smallish plane and I was sitting in the back right beside the window. I suddenly needed to get out. My fear seems to be related mostly to not having enough air - even although I know rationally that there is plenty. After trying various remedies I eventually persuaded the doctor to give me some diazepam. I use it as a "pocket prop" - just knowing it is there as a way out stops me panicking - and I hardly ever take it. I've also found the air circulation diagrams on the Boeing web site (which you can find on this web site) extremely helpful, because of my particular worry about breathing, and I imagine the airplane cabin as a kind of tunnel through which fresh air is passing (interesting just how much there is - I had no idea there was such a rapid change over and that so much of it comes from outside the plane). I tried a course of Neuro Linguistic Programming which was quite helpful too. As a result I shut my eyes and imagine I'm in an open tent in a forest in the rain - sometimes a portable fan I keep in my pocket helps the illusion - sounds daft but it does help. |
